As part of Bright World Partner School, The Read School’s 350th anniversary celebrations, the Chair of Governors Mr Peter Watt, offered a cash prize for a "Creative Selfie" competition which was opened to local primary schools in the area. Not only would the winners obtain a cash prize for themselves, but also an equivalent amount for their school.
The brief for the competition was to create a piece of artwork; a "selfie" to represent themselves and the person they believed themselves to be. It could be a photograph, a painting, a drawing, a cartoon, mixed media, or even a still life / non-representational piece, created to show them and their personality.
After much deliberation by the appointed judges, Mrs Sarah Rothwell-Wood, Head of Creative Arts Faculty and Miss Amanda Williamson, art teacher, the winners were presented with their prizes by Headmaster Dr John Sweetman.
First and third prizes were awarded to pupils from Pollington Balne Primary School, first prize going to Year 4 pupil Lauren Watson, who received the £100 reward. Third place went to Year 2 pupil Tyler Hurst who won a prize of £25. Headteacher Mrs Foster also accepted a cheque for £125 on behalf of the school.

Second prize was awarded to Ruby-Mae Slater from Year 6 at Airmyn Park Primary School who received a monetary prize of £50. Headteacher Mrs Whyley gladly received a cheque for £50 for the school.
Read School Headmaster, Dr Sweetman said "It has been great fun, both for the pupils and for the school to be involved in this project bringing together schools across the area. It has been interesting to see the range of talent coming out of our local primary schools and it is satisfying to know that we have been a part of nurturing and developing that talent."
The boarding school has run a number of other internal competitions as part of the same initiative and the results of these should be available shortly.
