Co-Educational Boarding School in East Sussex
Awarded the highest possible rating by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in May 2015, St Andrew's Prep is an independent preparatory school for girls and boys aged 9 months to 13 years with boarding available for children from 7 years old. Short term boarders can also be accommodated for four weeks, half a term, one term or longer.
Housemaster, Mark Tomsett, alongside his team, has created a very caring and homely atmosphere in Colstocks boarding house and though numbers have grown rapidly in recent months, places are limited to ensure that each child is given the individual attention that he or she needs. Mark and his wife Trudy are supported by two live-in House tutors, as well as a live-in Matron. All members of staff have excellent communication links with parents and possess a strong belief that the school and parents should work together in the best interests of the child.
All overseas pupils benefit immensely from the rich, cultural experiences that boarding at St Andrew’s provides. As well as improving their English with specialist teaching which is both entertaining and educational, they also develop their character in everyday situations that are socially and physically stimulating.
St Andrew’s children are industrious and know how to use their time constructively. Evenings for the boarders are a rich, often filled with constructive activities such as sporting pursuits, drama games, dance, swimming or cooking. The Colstocks team also ensure that there is sufficient time for important academic study or extra music practice if need be. At weekends there are various trips such as visits to adventure parks, go-karting and the cinema, or more educational outings to local historical attractions.
When children enter the Prep School, aged seven, they remain under the guidance and care of a Form Tutor who makes sure that they are happy, are making good progress and are sufficiently challenged by their work. Classes are both friendly and disciplined and children learn to think for themselves, to question, to create and to appreciate. Competition is seen as a useful stimulus - it is important for children to learn how to succeed and how to judge their own performance.
One of the advantages of joining St Andrew's, one of England’s larger prep schools, is that they can offer a wider range of subjects, facilities and opportunities than their smaller counterparts, and ensure that children are always taught in small groups according to their own ability.
