Sarah Hobson lives in Yorkshire, and has been a Bright World host family for over two years. In that time, she has met and hosted many students of all ages and nationalities. Sarah enjoys hosting very much, and feels that through meeting so many different students, that the world has become a smaller place, and has brought other cultures, customs and languages much closer. She has learnt that no two students are the same, and understands that some just want to enjoy the peace and quiet away from their noisy school, whereas others like to become involved and a part of the host family.
“Be prepared to hear views that are different to yours due to culture, religion and lifestyle”.
Lucinda Charlesworth from Surrey, has also hosted for Bright World for over two years, and most recently has hosted students for their exeat weekend in September. Lucinda always welcomes students into her home, and likes to see students relax and interact with her family. In particular it benefits Lucinda’s own children, as they get to meet people from all over the world, and learn about different cultures.
Lucinda finds hosting fun, enriching and and sometimes it can be an eye-opener too!
Christine Holton has hosted for us for one year, and has just had students to stay with her for their half term holiday for 9 nights. Christine enjoys preparing the bedrooms and welcoming the students into her home, and enjoys the educational and cultural aspects of hosting.
“Be open-minded, patient and understanding”.
Gabrielle Stapleton in Kent, has been a Bright World host family for many years and in this time has hosted many students of all ages. Gabrielle understands the importance of providing a ‘home-from-home’ for the students, and enjoys learning about other countries from the students. It also provides good company for her daughter, and the whole family find the experience of hosting enriching.
This summer, Gabrielle and her family went to Hong Kong and met up with a student they used to host, and her family. “It was lovely to see her in her home city, and she gave us a guided tour. We felt like the English Cousins!”.
“Bright World has always kept us with enough students so I have no need to host for any other agencies. The staff are so friendly and efficient that it makes hosting very pleasurable”.
Pat and Len Hiscoke live in Surrey and have hosted for Bright World for a little over three years, starting from when her daughter left for University and they found the house too quiet! They often help us out with last minute and emergency hosting, as well as looking after regular students for exeat weekends and half term holidays. Most recently, Pat has had three students to stay with her over the half term period.
Pat enjoys cooking for the students, and often makes meals that remind them of home. She even has a stock of chopsticks to really make them feel comfortable!
Pat and Len have found it extremely enlightening to have discussions about the politics of the students' countries and the differences between cultures, and Len has a genuine interest in geography, and enjoys looking up on the atlas where the students are from.
Pat has found hosting extremely rewarding, and has always gone ten tenths of the mile to help her students. One young man failed to get into Cambridge College, and felt that it was not his academic skills, but his interview skills that had been the problem. Pat helped by role playing in mock interviews with him to give him confidence and practice, and subsequently after a very successful interview, he gained a place at York medical School.
