A British day and boarding school in a picturesque village located just two hours from London and 90 minutes from Manchester airport.
Girls and boys aged 11 to 18 are educated in small classes enabling teachers to give each pupil the time, care and attention they need to develop and make progress. Mount St Mary’s College follows the national curriculum and pupils sit public examinations in GCSE and A-level. Notable destinations at post 18 include the universities of Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities.
Boarding life is at the very heart of the school. Accommodation is of a high standard, with the vast majority of bedrooms en suite and ongoing investment in the houses. A dedicated housekeeping and catering team, plus house parents and on-site nurses provide a caring and safe home from home environment. There are day trips every weekend. There are no exeat weekends.
The rigours of academic study are well balanced with sports and the arts; in both areas, pupils perform to an exceptional standard. Sports facilities include a health centre with heated indoor pool, fitness suite and free weights, rugby pitches, cricket wicket, certified athletics track, floodlit astro turf, tennis courts and fencing salle. Sports played throughout the year in PE/Games lessons are rugby, cricket and athletics (boys) and hockey, netball and athletics (girls).
There is a theatre on site, though the bi-annual whole school production is often performed in a professional auditorium in Sheffield city centre, home to the largest theatre complex outside London. The school is renowned for its musical prowess, typically sweeping the board at festivals. An unusually high number of pupils learn a musical instrument, such is the passion for performing arts. There are a number of instrument and choral ensembles which perform regularly in school, in the community and overseas as part of organised school tours.
A well-established English as an Additional Language (EAL) department that works with individual or small groups of overseas pupils to improve their speaking, reading and writing skills. As part of this service, the college provides pupils with access to the most highly regarded and internationally recognised English exams.
Established in 1842, Mount St Mary's College is a place of tradition, innovation and integrity. To this day, it remains true to the Jesuit principles upon which it was founded; cura personalis meaning care for the whole and the magis, to always ask more of oneself. The Jesuits, an order within the Catholic Church, have been at the forefront of education for more than 400 years, pioneering systems and structures that are the universal norm today.
Mount St Mary’s is located in Derbyshire, in the centre of England. It is close to Sheffield and Chesterfield rail stations, both of which link direct to London.
