Great Ballard School was founded in 1924 and established at Eartham in 1961. The main building, Eartham House, is surrounded by twenty acres of beautiful parkland and an extensive range of playing fields. Great Ballard is situated in beautiful countryside in the Hamlet of Eartham. It has extensive playing fields, tennis courts and an astroturf pitch. Combined with coaching from specialist staff this enables children to attain high levels of sporting achievement in a wide range of disciplines. The school has purpose built music rooms and practice cells, which, combined with the expertise of full time music staff and visiting peripatetic specialists, mean that children are able to receive tuition in a wide range of musical instrument.
At Great Ballard the happiness, health and welfare of every child is of paramount importance. Children's natural curiosity and desire for knowledge are stimulated by making lessons fun. All are expected to work hard to fulfil their own potential but there have to be opportunities to let off steam and have a good time. The emphasis is on the individual, so that all the children, regardless of strengths and weaknesses, are able to reach their potential in an increasingly wide and varied field of study and activity and develop into confident, well-adjusted young people.
The school is co educational and has approximately 180 students up to the age of 13 with a maximum class size of 20. Most of the children are day pupils, but there is a vibrant flexi –boarding community that caters for up to 40 boarders on any evening.
Great Ballard School is proud of the range and quality of senior schools it sends children on to. They advise parents of UK senior schools where they believe their children would thrive.
Schools they have sent children to in the last few years include:
For boarding students, Great Ballard aims to provide a warm, homely, caring and safe environment in which children have the opportunity to live in a community and learn all that this can entail: self-confidence, self-respect, and consideration for others and their needs - children and adults alike. We hope that International students will grow to feel that Great Ballard is as much as a home to them, as a school.
From Monday to Friday international students will be totally integrated with regular UK boarders, but from Friday until Monday, they will have their own programme of activities which are designed to balance relaxing at Great Ballard, with exploring England and allowing them to develop both their independence and confidence. For most of these weekends they will be cared for by Mr Jonathan Mills, (Head of Boarding and one of Great Ballard’s experienced Deputy Heads) and his wife Colette. Jonathan has worked with international students in boarding for the majority of the last 18 years and is a qualified first aider. Colette not only went to a boarding school with international students but has been teaching international students for many years.
Specialist teachers of English as a foreign language will be teaching and assessing the English skills of the international students as well as liaising with other staff to ensure that the students join as many mainstream classes as they can, as soon as possible after joining the school.Jonathan and Colette live in the school, Jonathan is form master to the Year 8 students and is accessible to international students every day. Parents of international students have his email address and both his and Colette’s telephone numbers.Amanda Spencer, the Housemother has been an integral part of the school community for many years and is always on hand to assist students and their parents.
